The Sinking of the Old Casting Pool

Here's a little story from Bill Stroud's original column in the Finny Facts that shows us how lucky we are to have our present day casting facility at Lake Murray.

Originally, SDFF used a pool facility at Morley Field.  It was constructed in an area where the dirt was poorly compacted.  The bottom of the pool was covered with tarpaper.  On Sunday mornings, the club had permission to use the facility.

Some Sundays there would be a large bubble on the bottom of the pool that caused the pool to leak.  Adding water to compensate for the leak caused the pool to sink in its bed and begin draining.  To solve this problem, a berm was built...but the weight of the berm only caused the pool to sink further and continue to drain.

It did not take long to realize we needed another facility!  We are now at Lake Murray thanks to Jim Brown who deserves a tremendous amount of credit for where the club is today.

Since Bill originally told the story above, the club has moved its casting facility to Lake Murray, a site which is much closer to most of the club's membership.  We still owe Jim Brown though for our transition from the sinking pool to Lake Morena:  the first step on the road to our current site at Lake Murray: a great place for anyone to learn how to fly cast, for free!
